EV Charger Installation: What It Costs and What's Involved

Thinking about a home EV charger? Here's an honest breakdown of installation costs, what's involved electrically, and what to ask your sparky before signing anything.

If you’ve just bought an EV — or you’re getting close to pulling the trigger — home charging is one of the first things to sort out. You can charge off a normal wall socket overnight, but it’s slow, and it’s not how the charger is designed to run long-term.

A dedicated Level 2 home charger is faster, safer, and better for your car’s battery. Here’s what’s involved.

What is a Level 2 charger?

There are two levels of home charging in New Zealand:

  • Level 1: Plugs into a standard 10A outlet. Adds about 10–15km of range per hour. Fine for a PHEV or if you only do short distances.
  • Level 2: A dedicated 32A circuit, usually 7kW. Adds about 40–50km per hour. Can fully charge most EVs overnight.

Most EV owners want Level 2. The difference in charge time is significant — especially if you’re coming home with a depleted battery.

What’s the installation actually involve?

Four things:

1. Switchboard assessment

Before we can add a 32A circuit, we need to know your switchboard has the capacity. Most modern boards in South Auckland homes can handle it, but some older boards — especially in state housing — may need upgrading first. We’ll check this at the quote stage.

2. Cable run

We need to run a cable from your switchboard to where the charger will be mounted. This is usually the garage, carport, or an outside wall. The distance and routing affects the cost. Longer runs through walls or under flooring take more time.

3. Charger installation

The charger itself is mounted to the wall. We connect it to the cable, set it up, and test it. Most units take 1–2 hours once the cable is in place.

4. Certification

All new circuit installations require an Electrical Certificate of Compliance (ECC). We provide this — it’s your proof the work was done properly. Some EV manufacturers or insurers ask for it, and it’s relevant if you sell the house.

How much does it cost?

Installation only (you supply the charger): $500–$900 for a straightforward install — cable run under 10m, existing board has capacity.

Installation + charger supply: $1,100–$2,000 depending on the charger brand and features. We can supply and install popular models.

If the switchboard needs upgrading: Add $800–$1,500 on top. This is worth doing if the board is old — you’re not just enabling the EV charger, you’re bringing the whole house up to standard.

These are indicative ranges. The only way to get an accurate number is to get a quote for your specific property.

What charger should I buy?

For most South Auckland homes, a 7kW (32A) charger from a reputable brand is all you need. We can recommend models based on your car and budget. Key things to look for:

  • Wi-Fi or Bluetooth app control (lets you schedule charging for off-peak hours)
  • Weatherproof rating (IP54 minimum for outdoor installation)
  • Smart charging capability if you have solar or a time-of-use power plan
  • Compatible with your EV (most use the same Type 2 connector in NZ)

We don’t push any particular brand — we’ll tell you what works for your situation.

Things to watch out for

Load balancing: If you have other high-draw appliances (heat pump, oven, shower), talk to your sparky about load management. In most homes it’s a non-issue, but in some older properties it’s worth checking.

Outdoor installation: If the charger is going outside — carport, wall-mounted — make sure it has appropriate weatherproofing. We’ll advise on positioning and protection.

No hidden extras at handover: Some installers quote a low price and then add extras on the day. Ask for an itemised quote upfront that includes cable, fittings, mounting hardware, and the ECC.
